ISCHIA

Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, being roughly circular
in shape, with a circumference of about 35 Km. It is renowned for its
Thermal spring waters, as its under-ground volcanic activities source them
at various temperatures. Volcanic in origin and with the peak of Mt.
Epomeo, an extinct volcanoe, covered with forest and vineyards, it is
known as the " Green Island". The history of Ischia
is recorded from
ancient Greek and Roman times. It stood as a sentinel at the entrance to
the harbours of Neopolis and Puteolanum, and was known as Pithecusa. Today
its sandy shores and picturesque harbours welcome holidaymakers to small
and elegant resorts such as Ischia porto, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno and
Forio. All have hotels with in-house thermal springs for health and beauty
treatment, or for a relaxing holiday on the beach. The cuisine of Ischia
is well known throughout the region for its rabbit or fish-based
specialities, accompanied by the excellent local wines.
